The clipboard is one of the most frequently used and least carefully designed parts of an operating system. It has one slot, it is not a durable history by default, and it usually has no relationship with your other devices. You may copy a meeting link on a Mac and then have to search for it again on Windows, or press Win+V for a configuration from ten minutes ago only to find that later copies pushed it out.
We put Windows Clipboard History, the open-source Ditto, macOS-focused Maccy, Apple-oriented Paste, and Syzygy into real workflows. We compared history capacity, formats, sync architecture, previews, and privacy boundaries. Here is the short version:
- One Windows computer and simple needs: Win+V is free, already installed, and its 25-item history is enough for light use.
- A heavy Windows-only workflow: Ditto offers a large history and broad local format support, with an older interface and more configuration.
- An all-Apple workflow: Maccy is a fast local history, while Paste adds iCloud sync and organization.
- A workflow across Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, or one that needs a Linux build: traditional tools stop at their ecosystem boundaries. Syzygy supports four platforms formally and provides a Linux build. Choose Pro or Team for cross-device pairing; Free remains a complete local workspace.
1. Three built-in limits shape every clipboard tool
An operating-system clipboard is a shared temporary area: applications can write to it and read from it, but it has three built-in limits. First, it is a single slot, so a second copy replaces the first. Second, it is not durable, so a restart or sign-out can remove history. Third, it is local to the device unless another channel is added.
Win+V, Ditto, and Maccy mainly add history. Universal Clipboard, Paste, and Syzygy mainly add a cross-device channel. Start by deciding whether your problem is missing history, an ecosystem wall, or both.
2. The candidates
1. Windows Clipboard History (Win+V): free and convenient, with a clear ceiling
Windows 10 and later include Clipboard History. Enable it under Settings -> System -> Clipboard, then press Win+V. It keeps up to 25 items, supports text, images, and web content up to roughly 4 MB per item, and may clear unpinned items after a restart. It can sync between Windows devices when they use the same Microsoft Account, but pinned items do not participate in that sync. It is an excellent zero-cost starting point for light use; the 25-item ceiling becomes painful as soon as you need older history.
2. Universal Clipboard (macOS): handoff, not history
Apple's Universal Clipboard has no history list. It extends the one-slot clipboard to devices signed into the same Apple Account. Bluetooth and Handoff must be enabled, the devices need to be near each other, and the copied content is available only briefly. It solves a quick handoff, not history, search, or organization, and it has no native Mac-to-Windows, Linux, or Android path.
3. Ditto: a strong open-source choice for one Windows machine
Ditto can be configured for a history in the thousands, with about 500 items by default. It supports text, images, HTML, and file records, plus fast search, paste-as-plain-text, and command-line access. Password-protected LAN sync can push content between Ditto instances on the same Windows network. Its boundaries are just as clear: there is only a Windows client, and sync stops at network or platform boundaries. The interface and configuration are deliberately traditional.
4. Maccy: minimalism on macOS
Maccy is an open-source menu-bar history manager for macOS. Its shortcut, keyword filter, and Enter-to-paste flow is short, history size is configurable, and images are supported. It intentionally avoids pinboards, heavy rich-format management, and cross-device sync. Once the workflow leaves the Mac, another tool is needed.
5. Paste: organization inside the Apple ecosystem
Paste is a subscription product for macOS and iOS that syncs history through iCloud. Its strengths are its interface and Pinboard organization for replies, snippets, and design specifications. It has no Windows, Linux, or Android client, so the iCloud ecosystem is also its boundary.
6. Syzygy: a local workspace with controlled cross-device capabilities
Syzygy's product boundary is easiest to explain by plan. Free is a complete single-device local workspace with history, pins, favorites, tags, Trash, search, Quick Panel, rich previews, OCR, translation, AI auto-tagging, and AI profiles. Pro and Team add trusted pairing, realtime or on-demand sync, relay, and the mobile companion.
macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS are supported. A Linux build is available, but its stability should follow the current download-page notes; do not describe its maturity as identical to every other platform.
Cross-device transfer starts only after Pro or Team devices establish a trusted relation. Clients prefer a local-network or NAT-traversed direct path, then use encrypted relay when direct connection fails. A Pro PC can connect up to two Free mobile devices. A Free PC never participates in pairing; PC-to-PC sync requires a Pro seat on each PC. Free-to-Free devices do not create sync relations.
The content tools are part of the Free local workspace:
- Quick Panel and search: open history with a global shortcut, filter by keyword, and press Enter to paste into the focused application.
- Rich previews: image, PDF, SVG, Markdown, Excalidraw, and Figma previews are Free; Excalidraw and Figma are primarily desktop previews.
- OCR: start from an image or rendered preview, or open
/plugins/ai-tools. - Translation: start from a clipboard item or
/plugins/ai-toolsafter configuring a translation provider. - AI processing:
/plugins/ai-toolsprovides AI auto-tagging and/plugins/ai-profilesmanages profiles. Configured providers return a new snapshot while preserving the original. - Binary previews: DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and ZIP previews are Pro/Team desktop capabilities, not Free capabilities.

4. Five real workflow tests
Scenario one: cross-device paste starts with plan and device roles
Free history and previews work locally, but Free-to-Free does not create a sync relation. After Pro or Team devices approve both sides, clients try a local-network or NAT-traversed direct path and use encrypted relay only when direct connection fails. A Pro PC can connect up to two Free mobile devices. A Free PC never participates in pairing, and PC-to-PC sync requires two Pro PCs.

F --> H["Device B decrypts and writes to history"]
G --> HScenario two: recover something copied an hour ago
Win+V's 25 items are fine for light use but not a long-term history. Ditto, Maccy, Paste, and Syzygy all make recall easier with search. Syzygy Free searches and organizes locally; cross-device recall requires a Pro or Team trusted sync. Image thumbnails and rich previews also reduce paste-and-check loops.
Scenario three: design and visual assets
Color values, SVG code, Excalidraw JSON, and Figma clipboard payloads should not all look like one line of ordinary text. Syzygy Free previews show colors, SVG graphics, Excalidraw canvases, or Figma previews according to content type; Excalidraw and Figma are primarily desktop features. DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and ZIP previews are Pro/Team desktop capabilities. Check the pricing page for the current format matrix.
Scenario four: text in images, translation, and AI processing
After copying a screenshot, start OCR from the image or rendered preview, or open /plugins/ai-tools. Start translation from a clipboard item or the same plugin page after selecting a configured provider. AI auto-tagging is in /plugins/ai-tools, while profiles are managed in /plugins/ai-profiles. Processing creates a new snapshot and leaves the original available. These capabilities are Free, but provider availability and platform entry points follow the current client.
Scenario five: passwords and keys
For local tools, the device is the main trust boundary. Account-backed sync adds the provider's cloud boundary. Syzygy Pro and Team transfer directly when possible and expose only ciphertext to relay when a relay path is needed. Whichever tool you choose, clear sensitive content when finished and use privacy exclusions or automatic cleanup.

- Light Windows single-device use: turn on Win+V; 25 items are usually enough.
- Heavy Windows single-device use: choose Ditto for a larger history and broader local formats.
- Apple-only use: use Maccy for local history and Paste for pinboards and ecosystem sync.
- Cross-platform without sync: Syzygy Free provides local history, search, previews, OCR, translation, and AI tools.
- Cross-platform with sync: use Syzygy Pro or Team. For two PCs, assign a Pro seat to each PC.

7. Frequently asked questions
How many items can Windows Clipboard History store?
Windows Clipboard History keeps up to 25 items. Pinned items can remain available, but the feature is better for light use than as a long-term knowledge base.
Can I use Ditto on macOS or Linux?
No. Ditto's official client targets Windows. Workflows that include macOS, Linux, or mobile devices need another option.
Does Maccy support cross-device sync?
No. Maccy is a local history manager. Apple-device sync is the role of Paste, while cross-operating-system sync requires Syzygy Pro or Team.
Does Paste have Windows, Linux, or Android clients?
No. Paste primarily covers macOS and iOS, so an iCloud workflow stops covering the chain as soon as Windows, Linux, or Android is involved.
Which platforms does Syzygy support?
macOS, Windows, Android, and iOS are supported. A Linux build is available, but its stability and platform coverage should follow the current download-page notes. Free is primarily a local single-device workspace; cross-device pairing and sync are Pro/Team capabilities.
What does Syzygy peer-to-peer sync mean? Does data always go through the cloud?
After Pro or Team devices establish a trusted relation, clients try a local-network or NAT-traversed direct path first and use encrypted relay only when direct connection fails. Both paths carry end-to-end encrypted data, and relay only forwards ciphertext. Free devices do not create sync relations with each other.
Where do Syzygy OCR, translation, and AI features start?
OCR starts from an image or rendered preview and is also available in /plugins/ai-tools. Translation starts from a clipboard item or /plugins/ai-tools. AI auto-tagging is in /plugins/ai-tools, and AI profiles are managed in /plugins/ai-profiles. Configure the relevant provider first; outputs create a new snapshot while the original remains available.
8. Beyond the clipboard: Syzygy's vision and roadmap
If Syzygy were only a better clipboard, it would use only a small part of its potential. Clipboard sync solves the lowest-level problem, information flow. Our broader vision is to let personal digital information flow freely, be understood, be organized, and eventually be used by AI. The product starts with cross-device data flow, treats the personal Workspace as its center, and progressively adds voice and AI Agents.
The roadmap has four layers from the bottom up:

L4["Layer 4: AI Agents and voice - instruction in, work completed"]
L3["Layer 3: Personal Workspace - information organized and retained"]
L2["Layer 2: Understanding and processing - OCR, translation, AI"]
L1["Layer 1: Flow - Pro/Team trusted sync; Free local workspace"]
L4 --> L3 --> L2 --> L1Layer 1 is delivered: Free provides the local workspace, while Pro and Team provide trusted pairing, direct P2P first, and relay fallback. Layer 2 is also available through OCR, translation, AI auto-tagging, profiles, and rich previews, and will continue to improve. Personal Workspace and AI Agent/voice capabilities remain roadmap directions; this article does not invent dates.
Read the product vision and roadmap first for the four-layer model, then return to this comparison. Current capabilities and plan entitlements are defined by the pricing comparison table.
Copy and paste is one of the least changed interactions in four decades of graphical interfaces, but the infrastructure around it is changing the default experience. If you only need dependable local history, Syzygy Free is complete. If you need trusted cross-device sync, choose Pro or Team. Start with the Syzygy home page for current platforms and downloads, then choose for your workflow.
